In my twelve years of practicing Reiki, I have done over 10,000 sessions and have had maybe 100 clients that I just did not “jive” with. I wish I could ask them why they chose to come to me. My assumption is their answer would be something like, “You were the closest” or “I read your reviews” or the famous “My spouse told me I needed to see you”.
The first thing I need to make clear is if you are going to go into a Reiki session with one foot out of the door, just don’t. Try acupuncture for physical healing or EMDR for emotional healing. This may sound harsh but the basic principle of Reiki is that you are healing yourself through the Reiki Practitioner. You have to be willing to heal and be open to receiving the energy. If you are super skeptical and looking to call BS, you probably won't get the results you are looking for.. or you will? As a Reiki Master, we are just the “straw” that you “drink” the universal healing energy through, but it is YOUR energy that pulls it through. We don't “give” you Reiki we allow you to pull it through us. Don’t worry, this doesn't require any effort on your part except to allow and relax. Now that we have got that out of the way, let's talk about what makes for a truly transformative healing experience. It is so important that you feel comfortable with your Reiki Practioner. The more relaxed you are the more energy you will receive. When you are looking at websites, look at the practitioner's photos and videos. Make sure that the person feels warm and like someone you could enjoy spending time with. I am not saying you have to feel like you could be besties but it is important that there is enough resonance that they can understand you, and your experience, and that you will not feel judged. It is important to feel like you can respect them in the role of a healer and trust that they can help you create the changes you want to make. Experience comes into play here. While there are many powerful healers just coming into their craft, nothing speaks more soundly than experience. I made many mistakes in my early years that at the time, I didn't even recognize. There truly is no substitute for learned experience. Reiki is often taught in a few short days with little follow-up or apprenticeship. Reiki in itself cannot cause harm but the practitioner certainly can, if they are not in a good energetic/spiritual space or if they are not trauma-informed. This leads me to my next suggestion, please look at their credentials. What training have they received? Do they continue their education at present? Do they have a Reiki lineage and certificate? Did they receive actual attunements? The attunement process is how someone is linked to the source of Reiki. Mikao Usui who founded Reiki created this process to pass on the divine gift, some common organizations in the West no longer practice attunements- but it is the staple in how Reiki was passed for hundreds of years. Look at reviews, what are other people saying? You should feel noticeably different after a Reiki session. Most people feel lighter and looser in their bodies, more relaxed, and less stressed. Now… if you are someone who suppresses your feelings you may need to release some emotion after Reiki but you should feel amazing after. If you are someone who pushes yourself too hard, you may need rest after Reiki but after resting you will feel great. If you have tried more than two sessions without experiencing any change don’t give up on Reiki try another Reiki Practitioner. Reiki works, it is real, and having a Reiki session can help. Most Reiki Practitioners have good intentions but maybe your energetics are better aligned with someone else. I am so excited that you have found Reiki, it is life-changing and I have seen miraculous healing emotional and physical. Keep walking along the path, you are so worth it. Peace and blessings!
